Lost Your Car Keys: 3 Things You Can Do Before Calling a Locksmith
Chances are it has happened to you: you are coming to your car and suddenly you realize that you can’t find your keys. You may have left them somewhere such as work or out running errands, or they may be lost in your friend's house or purse. Before you call an emergency locksmith to open your car, there are things you can do to help find those lost keys.
1. Double Check Everywhere
The first thing to do is to make sure that you really don’t have your keys. They could just be buried somewhere in your own home or jeans pockets, so it is important to make sure before you panic. If you are someone who misplaces your keys regularly, you can put a key finder on them. This is a tracking device for keys that attaches to them, with a remote that allows you to sound the alarm inside the device. If the keys are within a certain range, you will hear it go off and be able to find them more easily.
2. Think Where You May Have Left Them
If you find that your keys are not on your person or in your car, you may be able to find out where they are by simply thinking of everywhere you went that day after you left the car and locked up. You can then go to those locations in search for them. Although key replacement may seem like an easier idea at this point, keep in mind that you may have to get new door locks if you have a locksmith unlock your car. So, don’t get discouraged and keep looking.3. Ask a Friend/Family Member
For some people, the solution to your problem may be as easy as calling the other people that have your spare key and having them help you get inside. You can then see if maybe you left them at home that day and perhaps that the other people in the home were the ones that locked the door. If you cannot find your keys, ask a friend to keep your spare key so that you don't have to face similar problems in the future.
Rest Assured
If all of these methods fail, you may have to get a locksmith to come open your car door locks and either make you a new key or replace your locks, depending on what kind of security lock you have on your door. This may be necessary if you simply cannot get into your car, or if you are unable to find your lost keys you may want to call one anyway to change the locks. Having a lost key out there somewhere can be dangerous, especially if someone figures out where your car is and that the key is yours. Therefore, sometimes a locksmith may be necessary for security reasons. However, trying all of these solutions first and making sure to keep calm can save you the time and money of needing a professional to unlock your door for you.
