Where to Hide a Spare Key to a Safe
Ideally, there would never be a need for a spare set of keys because we would always remember where we put the first set. This is not always the case and losing a set of keys now and then is bound to happen.
The problem is when there is no safe place to keep keys outside where they won’t be found. The old ‘hidden key under the doormat’ trick has become a bit obvious and it is usually the first place someone looks if they want to break-in.
It is possible with a little ingenuity to hide a set of keys where they are safe and will not be found by the wrong people.
DIY at Home
There are many ideas available about where to hide a key outside. There are fake rocks that can be bought to hide keys, however, the problem with these is that they look very fake and therefore are more likely to draw unwanted attention. DIY rocks to hide a key tend to look more real.
Take a rock from the backyard and hot glue an old prescription pill container on to the bottom of it. Put the key in the pill bottle and then put the rock in the backyard with the key in the ground. A real rock looks much less suspicious and is also much more durable. If the concern is about forgetting what rock it is, paint the house numbers on it, this will make the rock look decorative yet still keep the keys secret and secure.
Apartments and Cars
There are fewer places to hide a spare key on a car and outside an apartment. Hiding a spare key somewhere outside the car ensures that it is always available if something goes wrong, but where to hide it is the real question.
Purchasing a small magnetic lock box for the spare key and hiding it below the car on the metal frame is both a safe and inconspicuous way to always have the spare keys available.
How to hide a key outside an apartment is a little more difficult as there are very few places outside an apartment door that are not obvious. Keeping a spare key on a string inside the door and having the string knotted on the outside of the door to be easily pulled through in case of emergency is a simple solution.
Safes
Some keys can be hidden within the home, making options for hiding them a bit more fun. Where to keep gun safe keys can be a pressing question as it is important to keep the key secure and away from anyone who does not have permission to use weapons. Safes can also hide important information such as government documents that no one should get their hands on.
There are a number of fake hollowed out household items that can be bought such as hair brushes and books that can be hidden away inconspicuously. These items can be hollowed out at home as well following a DIY guide.
When should you call a locksmith?
If, for some reason, the keys and the spare keys are gone for good, the best thing to do is call a locksmith. They will be able to get the door open and make new keys with ease. Just make sure to not lose the new set!
